BA in Art and Psychology

I am a figure painter who primarily uses acrylic or oil on canvas. A strong motif of platonic intimacy, physical rest and the mundane flow through my paintings. I am drawn to human interactions and creating a narrative story lead by gaze and body language. Motivated to discover my Angolan heritage, I began reading ‘Poems from Angola’ by Michael Wolfers, many of the titles are excerpts from
the poems.

I use acrylic paint on canvas to create flowers inspired by my personal nostalgia of bright childhood summers, creating a space between present and past, using flowers as a symbol for the passage of time. I play with using string to add a tactile element to my work, enhancing the painted flowers whilst depicting the enduring threads of my intimate recollections. I aim to communicate the feeling of being in a happier place to the viewer, intertwining the canvas with the warmth of sunlit afternoons in my childhood garden, further drawing the viewer in to engage with my work emotionally and physically.

I mainly work with the craft of crochet to create abstract-looking & often soft sculptures. Most recently, I have been exploring the sensory elements of it by inviting the viewer to interact with these strange-looking forms. I often try to incorporate bright, bold colours as these emphasize the desire of touch. In future artworks, I hope to experiment further with sensory experiences, by stuffing the crochet with lavender, for instance.

We live in a society where approximately 1 in 6 people are diagnosed with a mental health condition. However, there is still much stigma around this diagnosis and the treatment following. My work explores these negative attitudes towards mental health through video and installations with the aim to promote progressive conversations around this often avoided topic.

I began to experiment with video and animation as media in my third year of university. My work in the past has engaged with various media like paintings, installations and ceramics. I explore the relations between the history of art and contemporary phenomena. My recent artworks are discovering the boundaries of digital media in art production. I take the historical trajectory of when technologies entered the art field as context. Delve into themes like post-production, internet circulation and metanarratives.

My work explores the superficiality of modern social life, specifically demonstrating the impact of advancements in technology and it’s influence on relationships, as well as social pressures within the world of drinking and hook-up culture. Using painting as my medium of choice, I aim to convey how modern socialising has developed in a way that leaves the individual isolated, and the masses disconnected as a result.

BA in Art and English Literature

I am a digital artist who works mainly with animation and more recently AR and sculpture. This year, I have been incorporating AR into my artwork, exploring the interactive aspects of art and how this can change a viewer’s experience. Previously, I looked at interaction through game design on Twine, and how an artwork can only exist when it is played with. I’m really fascinated by pushing the boundaries of how people can respond to an artwork, looking at how there can be hidden layers to artwork, and how there can be depth through it remaining entirely digital.

My practices consisted of a variation of acrylic paintings, natural sculptures and photography to catalogue and capture the changes nature goes through. My work predominantly consists of animal paintings on wooden surfaces such as rounds, and then combines these with nature for their integration back into natural surroundings. I hope to realise in the form of artwork the reason we need to be grateful for what surrounds us in the natural world and not squander it.

In my artistic exploration this year, I’ve merged screen-printing and photography to delve into the theme of homelessness in Berlin. Growing up in the city and later moving to Reading for university has heightened my awareness of the profound invisibility faced by those living on its streets. Through my work, I aim to highlight this reality by capturing the essence of Berlin’s landscapes and moments, offering a visual narrative that prompts reflection and dialogue on the challenges of homelessness.

My practice explores the intersection between cultural erasure and its effect on generational trauma. I involve a lot of elements from Basque mythology and cultural traditions as well as personal stories involving myself and past generations in my family. I focus on our connection with the land, nature and language, and focus on each generation’s differences in the struggles for Basque freedom and independence. I have done a few performance pieces in the past but have recently delved back into woodwork and mixed media.
