My practice focuses on mythology and the black British diasporic condition – specifically Caribbean as I have Jamaican heritage. The realities of conflict being part of the diasporic condition living in London are constantly questioned. It can be exhausting to only hyper-fixate on the struggle ensued, and I hope to positively refresh this perspective through the progressive question “now that we know, how do we live?”. I believe this question encapsulates my whole practice. Nature, mythology, and stars embellish my paintings – this is mainly because I’m interested in how they all challenge time. I began to use these perennial features (mythology, stars and nature) to immortalise the subjects I paint, surrounding them in a metaphorical shield of protection. The concept of time is always subtly evaluated through my paintings, whether by symbolic motifs, or archival photos, our right to simply exist is a strong stance.
